Summary edit

Description The Joseph W. Fifer in Franklin Square (1896). Fifer was the 19th Governor of Illinois. After working in his father's brickyard in Danvers, he enlisted in the 33rd Illinois Infantry. He was severely wounded at Battle of Jackson, Mississippi during the Vickburg Campaign. He refused a discharge and spent the rest of the war guarding a prison boat. Fifer moved to Bloomington after the war to study at Illinois Wesleyan University. He served as a city and state attorney. In 1880, he was elected to the Illinois State Senate, where he served until 1887. He came to notability over his fights for soldier's pensions. Earning the nickname "Private Joe" for his commitment to the armed forces, Fifer was elected Governor of Illinois in 1889. He served one term, most notably granting a pardon to serial killer Thomas Neill Cream, who went on to commit at least four more murders. William McKinley appointed him to the Interstate Commerce Commission in 1899. His daughter Florence was the first female Illinois State Senator.
