e that the current is leaving the shed for the fields at a potential which may be as high as 100,000 volts. Of course, as previously stated, it must always be borne in mind that this high tension has little to do with the actual quantity of the electricity involved. It is well known that there are two poles in the electric current, and that the course of the charge is in a circular direction. In the case of the experiments under consideration the positive pole is connected with the overhead system of wires, whilst the negative pole is carried to the earth. Thus we must imagine the electric discharge as passing along the overhead system of wires down through the growing plants to the earth, and in this way completing the circuit. It is interesting to remember that in a natural state the electrical condition of the atmosphere is almost always positive, so that in supplying the current on the lines indicated, one is only intensifying the normal state of affairs.
