emporium of the world with itspresent degradation. The noble cisterns are ingreat part choked up with sand and rubbish,except those which were made use of by theFrench garrison. Round the Saracen towers is awall ill built and low, known by the name of theEnceinte des Arabes. South of the town, and nearly in a line w iththe Pharos, stands that grand piece of antiquity,Pompeys pillar. Nothing can exceed the beautyof this line monument of ancient architecture :it is in the highest state of preservation, excepton the north west quarter, which I imagine hassuffered from the constant and violent w inds blow-ing from that point the greater part of the year. The remains of a Greek inscription are plainlyvisible on the western face of the pedestal. The French have repaired the foundation sup-porting the pedestal, which had formerly beendestroyed in part by the brutal rapacity of anArab ; who, imagining some treasure lay con-cealed under it, attempted, but happily in vain, riatf 4^», Tla.le3^.
