With the assistance of the glass we made out the facadeto be larger to all appearance thanthat of the temple at the easternapproach, and nowise inferior toit in richness and beauty. Upon examination, one would be in-clined to conclude that the projectors of this work,inspired by a purer taste than belonged to theirage, had recourse not indeed to the fountain headof the arts, nor even to the beauties of some of themonuments which they might have found at home,and which might have served them as models, butonly to that stage at which the architects wentastray from the true and only path that conductedto perfection.
