Summary edit

Description
English: Julian's Bower, Alkborough The 'turf maze' at Alkborough - strictly speaking a labyrinth (which is unicursal, following one single path as opposed to a maze which has many dead ends). There is no reliable way of dating such relics as their continued existence means they have been re-cut regularly and any dating evidence would have been disturbed. It is sometimes said they were used by religious penitents of the early church who would follow the paths on hands and knees, but there seems to be no documentary evidence for this. The earliest recording of Julian's Bower is from 1697 when it was thought to be Roman but its true origins remain unknown.
