Description
Deutsch: Die "Laterne" des 1744 erbauten hölzernen Dachreiters (Chorturm) des Kölner Doms war ab 1803 von Jean Joseph Tranchot als Beobachtungsstation/Zielpunkt für eine Triangulation der vier linksrheinischen Departements genutzt worden. 1811 wurde der Dachreiter wegen Baufälligkeit abgerissen. Als Ersatz wurde 1836 das gotische Kreuz auf dem Ostchor als trigonometrischer Punkt genutzt. 1860/61 wurde im Zuge der Europäischen Längengradmessung (entlang dem 52. Breitengrad von Irland bis Russland) auf dem noch unvollendeten Südturm des Doms ein Steinpfeiler aufgemauert, auf dem die Winkelbeobachtungen ausgeführt wurden. Dieser Pfeiler musste dem Weiterbau der Domtürme weichen. Als Ersatz wurde 1867 in dem 1860 erbauten Vierungsturm ein eiserner Beobachtungstisch aufgestellt und genutzt. Daran befestigt ist eine Emailletafel mit der Inschrift "Tr. Pt. der europäischen Gradmessung 1867 Baeyer". Der Tisch und die Tafel wurden beim Wiederaufbau des Vierungsturms nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg weitgehend erneuert. Vgl. Der Kölner Dom - Vermessungspunkt der Landesaufnahme seit 1803.
