Königswinter war im Mittelalter ein befestigter Ort. Hinter einem breiten Graben verlief ein Wall, wahrscheinlich mit Palisaden. Diese wurden um 1400 durch eine Mauer mit vier Toren ersetzt.

Nach 1600 verfiel die nutzlos gewordene Mauer und wurde allmählich abgetragen. Um den Graben entstand ein Fuhrweg – die heutige Grabenstraße –, anstelle der Mauer die Straße Kleiner Graben. Die vor Hochwasser schützende rheinseitige Mauer wurde – wie die Tore – erst nach 1900 abgebrochen.

Hier stand bis 1845 das Kirkestor (=Kirchgassentor).
