Description / Descriptions : Katherine Jane Balfour (ca. 1814-1864) the daughter of Lieutenant-General Balfour of Balbirnie, Fifeshire, Scotland, married the only son of Edward Ellice on July 15, 1834. The Ellice household of the seigneury of Beauharnois was taken over by rebels on November 4, 1838, and Katherine was held captive for six days. An artist herself, she managed to sketch (as her diary describes them) the "picturesque ruffians" from a window, and a watercolour depicting this event is in the collection of the National Archives. She gave this (the most successful of the three miniature Ellice portraits) to her husband three years after their return to England, the inscribed date of 14 July 1841 being the eve of their wedding anniversary. /
