Description
English: The tallest buildings in the Village of Kenmore and indeed in the entire Town of Tonawanda are the Kenmore Village Apartments (left) and the Theater Apartments (right), a pair of high-rise apartment towers at the corner of Kenmore Avenue and Colvin Boulevard that each stand 120 feet (36 m) in height. The development of such high-rise apartments was a hot-button issue in Kenmore in the 1970s, with many village residents vociferously angry about the potential loss of Kenmore's quaint village atmosphere, which had already been eroding gradually in recent years thanks to Delaware Avenue's gradual transition into a traffic-choked commercial thoroughfare, and the the construction of the Kenmore Towers in 1970 on the same street. Residents expressed their frustration at the polls in the next election by voting out the longstanding Republican majority in the village government, but by that time, construction on the first of the two buildings seen here had already begun. Nonetheless, when the Kenmore Village Apartments opened its doors in July 1975, unites were leased so quickly that construction of the Theater Apartments was begun soon thereafter.
