In order to make the breeding of dogs pecuniarily successful it is necessary to keep the winners prominentbefore the public, and as a rule they are exhibited atseveral shows every year. No matter how they are con-ducted or the precautions taken, shows are a hardship \.odogs, and only a very few experiences are required \oinflict permanent injury. Therefore, after cracks havewon the highest honors, by all means withdraw them fromthe bench. Let this be the universal custom, and the gain must begreat. IN SEASON, The first occurrence of that peculiar state of the systemknown as the rutting season or oestruation, duringwhich only will the bitch allow the approaches of the dogand impregnation is possible, as a rule occurs about theninth month, but it varies in different breeds and individ-uals, also from the influence of constitution, diet and condi-tions and habits of life. For instance, some breeds usuallycome in season when about eight months old, whereasothers but rarely do so until the second year Again, inbitches that are healthy, well nourished, have ample exer-cise and are otherwise properly treated, this peculiar mani-festation is very generally noted much earlier than inbitches of poor constitution kept much in kennels or fedmainly on starchy foods and allowed but little meat. The return of this period is also subject to frequentvariations, and from much the same influences that delayits first occurrence ; and while bitches that are happilyplaced, well cared for
