Summary edit

Description

Keystone with eponymous motif on the Pineapple public house. Built c.1868, architect and builder unknown. The pub is grade II listed. Kentish Town, London Borough of Camden.

The pineapple was a symbol of extravagance as well as tropical beauty in industrial England. Requiring a specially heated glass house to keep alive, cultivators would charge hosts rent to display the pineapple at a party. Guests could queue up to admire the unique exotic aroma. If the pineapple did not make it through the night however, without being eaten, a hefty charge would be levied.
