DescriptionKilcrea Friary - geograph.org.uk - 1392086.jpg |
English: Kilcrea Friary The friary was founded in 1465 by Cormac Laidir MacCarthy, Lord of Muskerry who is buried within the church. It is a fine example of an Irish Franciscan monastery and mostly survives in good condition. Kilcrea was attacked by the English on several occasions following the suppression of the monasteries during the 16c. In 1650 it was occupied by Parliamentary forces, although its connection with the Franciscans would continue until the 19c. |
