| Description |
English: Kilton Ironstone Mine An overview of the former ironstone mine from about half way up the spoil heap known locally as 'Kilton Hill'. The mine operated from 1870 to 1963. The concrete building is the engine house dating from the 1930s although an electric winder had been installed in 1916. In front of this structure are two concrete blocks and in front of them and slightly left can just be seen the circular concrete cap over the 694 feet deep down shaft. The brick building nearest is a structure over the upcast shaft with an electric substation behind. In 1954 one man was killed and 31 injured in an explosion at the mine; see http://www.mine-explorer.co.uk/mines/Kilton_899/Kilton_12752.pdf for a transcript of a newspaper report. The site is now a nature reserve. |
