Summary
editDescriptionKing John's Tomb, Worcester Cathedral (14623142371).jpg | The tomb of King John (1167-1216), King of England and Duke of Normandy, Worcester Cathedral. The youngest son of Henry II, John attempted to seize the throne from his brother Richard II 'Coeur de Lion', when the latter was on Crusade. On Richard's death in 1199, John was recognised as King by England and Normandy but his other territories in France (Anjou and Brittany) recognised his nephew Arthur. John captured and murdered Arthur but lost Normandy to the King of France. John's tyranny led to the English Barons enforcing his signature of the Magna Carta in 1215 (arguably the first tentative steps towards a constitutional monarchy and ultimately a democracy) but his subsequent repudiation of the charter led to a civil war, during which John died at Newark. The Purbeck coffin lid is original but the tomb was rebuilt in 1540. Photograph taken on 23 June 2014. |
