Summary edit

Description
English: King of Terrors Gravestone This magnificent old headstone is located in Crailing Old Parish Churchyard about 100m south of Crailing House. The churchyard has been fenced off, thus preserving an impressive collection of 17th and 18th century symbolic stones from livestock damage. All the symbols on this stone are emblems of mortality, the main one being the standing skeleton with the weapon of Death, the scythe. It is the personification of Death, the King of Terrors, an ever-present menace. The symbols on the right from top to bottom are: the grave-digger's tools of crossed spade and turf-cutter; the hour-glass indicating the passing of time; and the Deid Bell. This handbell was rung to give notice of funerals and at the funeral itself. A skull representing Death and crossed bones complete the emblems of mortality on this stone.
