DescriptionKington Magna, Hely memorial window - geograph.org.uk - 1436695.jpg |
English: Kington Magna: Hely memorial window This window is installed within the east-facing wall at the southeast corner of the church.
The first memorial reads: The above window was erected to the glory of God and in memory of the grandfather, father, uncle and husband of EMILY JANE HELY who entered into rest on the Feast of St. Martins 1913 ...while the second expands considerably on the said lady: The above named Emily Jane Hely, widow of Major John Hely, of the 11th. Hussars, was born at Prospect Cottage in this parish, her maiden name being Stallard, and baptized in this church of All Saints on 8th. June, 1831. Besides this stained glass window, dedicated on the second Sunday in Lent, 1913, provision was made in her will for a runic churchyard cross, near the family vault of her ancestors, dedicated on the feast of S. John Baptist, 1915; a lych gate, dedicated on the Octave of All Saints, 1914; a heating system for the church; a stone facing for the outfall of water near the church; & the Stallard-Hely Charity Fundfor distribution by the rector and churchwardens amongst infirm, aged, crippled, or otherwise deserving poor people of not less than fifty years of age, of or belonging to the parish, S. Thomas Day being recommended for such distribution. One interesting thing about these inscriptions that caught my eye was the fact that there are half a dozen dates mentioned in the text, but each is given by a saints day or similar, rather than being referred to by the calendar date. |
