Az új református gimnázium megépülése után a tanulók létszáma fokozatosan emelkedett, szükségessé vált az új elemi népiskola építése is. Az első világháborúban egy ideig hadikórháznak használták, majd a 2.vh-ban német parancsnokság kórházzá alakította Az épület tömege a néhány évvel korábban épült Nemzeti Szálloda tömegéhez alkalmazkodva zárja a Kossuth tér észak-nyugati sarkát.
