DescriptionKlagenfurt - gallo-roman flask by Aco Acastus (Savoy or Piemont).jpg |
English: Gallo-roman fragment of flask in yellowish clay, found in Klagenfurt. Signed ACASTVS-ACO, a potter who worked in the area of Savoy or Piemont during the Augustean périod (turn of the first millenium) and who was inspired by the aretine sigillata technique and style of signature. He himself inspired his type of decorations to the fabric of Saint-Rémy-en-Rollat (in centre Gaul): a kind of arcading with floriated points. The inscription on this shard says: "Life is short, hope is frail. Come, [the ligths] are kindled; let us drink, comrades, while it is light.
Drawing by H.B. Walters, History of ancient pottery...', p. 518, fig. 225.
Walters, History of ancient pottery...', p. 518. |
