Summary edit
DescriptionKnightWheels SuttersCreekCA.jpg |
Two Knight Wheels (lathes) at the Knight Foundry, Sutters Creek, California, USA These are faceplates with gear teeth around the edge, and are "T" lathes, not Knight wheels. This picture appears to be of two "T" lathes, a variation of an engine lathe used primarily for facing large diameter parts. Knight Wheels have cups around their circumference to catch the water sprayed from the corresponding nozzle, and are usually covered to control the water spray. These "wheels are faceplates used on lathes and have gear teeth around their edges, not small buckets to catch water. The gear teeth are what drive the faceplate, and attached work piece, around their axis and against a cutting tool. Water and Knight wheels powered these two machines.
