Summary edit

Description The Knowlton L. Ames House, part of the Evanston Ridge Historic District (1911). This is one of two neighboring houses built for Ames. Knowlton "Snake" Ames was a standout collegiate football player for Princeton. Playing fullback, he scored 62 touchdowns for 730 points from 1886 to 1889. This point total is an unofficial NCAA record; official records are only kept since 1937. He was named to the first-ever All-America team in 1889. After graduating, he became head coach for Purdue University, where he went 12-0 over two years. He returned to football to play for the Chicago Athletic Association in 1892. He after a controversy with the New York Cresants, Ames left the team to return to coaching at Princeton. After retiring from football, Ames founded the Chicago Journal of Commerce and served as its publisher. He was named chairman of the board of the Booth Fisheries Company. In 1931, he committed suicide with a .38 revolver at the age of 63, recently ruined by the Great Depression. He was admitted to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1969. He still holds almost all (unofficial) Princeton college football records.
