English: Plaster casts in the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts, Stockholm, Sweden. Nike of Samothrace (Greek mythology), also called the Winged Victory of Samothrace, is a marble Hellenistic sculpture of the Greek goddess Nike (Victory), perhaps of the 2nd-century B.C. The sculpture was erected about 190 B.C. of the inhabitants of the small island of Samothrace in the northern Aegean Sea to commemorate the victory in a sea battle. Since 1884, it has been prominently displayed at the Louvre in Paris. In Roman mythology she is called Victoria.
Svenska: Konstakademiens gipser, Nike från Samothrake är en 244 centimeter hög marmorskulptur, som i den antika grekiska mytologin föreställer segergudinnan Nike. Skulpturen restes omkring 190 f.Kr. av invånarna på den lilla ön Samothrake i norra Egeiska havet för att högtidlighålla minnet av segern i ett sjöslag. Skulpturen grävdes fram 1863. Sedan 1884 finns den på Louvren i Paris. I den romerska mytologin kallas hon Victoria. |
