English: “Önümüzde bavullarımızı taşıyan bir zenci hamal olduğu halde, denizcilik acentalarının yer aldığı çirkin yapıların, Rum ve Levanten bankerlerin İtalyan stilinde inşa edilmiş evlerinin yanından, güneşli Kordon üzerinde yürümeye başladık. Fıstık satıcılarının, sucuların, midyecilerin ve ‘lustro, lustro’ diye bağıran küçük ayakkabı boyacılarının karmakarışık doldurmuş olduğu yol üzerinde, küçük bir de tramvay çalışmaktaydı… Fra Giacomo’nun epeyce bir para karşılığında dar odalarını kiraladığı şehir otelinin (Hotel de la Ville) yanında, çok sayıdaki çeşitli müşterilerine neler sunacağını çok iyi bilen ve usta bir psikolog olan bir patronun işlettiği bir Rum kahvehanesi yer alıyordu.”
