Title |
Kosher meat seal reverse |
||
Description |
English: A 15mm lead circular Kosher meat seal from the late 18 - early 19C. It is incomplete as a "Fishtail" piece has broken away from the bottom of the seal in antiquity. The complete seal is sometimes referred to as a "Plumba".
According to Geoff Egan (June 2010) - This is only part of a seal for a Kosher chicken, killed and prepared according to appropriate procedure within the Jewish community, probably C19th , though could perhaps be late C18th. The Hebrew legend reads 'kosher' and he thinks refers to the office of the Beth Din (Chief Rabbi) though the part recovered is not that with the name, which could have helped date it. See Geoff Egan's BM catalogue no. 356 - depending on the edition (more detail in the second) the last paragraph refers to this specific type. |
