L'autel de l'église Saint-François L'église de Saint Francois (St. Francis en anglais) est la plus vieille église européenne de l'Inde. Elle a été construite par les portugais en 1503. Elle abrite quelques pierres tombales. Le corps de l'explorateur portugais, Vasco da Gama, arrivé en Inde en 1498 et à Cochin en 1502, y a été enterré en 1524 avant d'être rapatrié à Lisbonne en 1538 au monastère des Hiéronymites L'église a été transformée par les hollandais en 1779 puis par les anglais en 1886-1887. Quelques points de repère historiques à Cochin Cochin était au XVème siècle une escale marchande importante sur la côte de Malabar pour le commerce des épices (en particulier le poivre) dominé à cette époque par les arabes. C'est pour les concurrencer que les portugais s'y sont établis avec l'accord du Raja local. Le premier fort portugais et l'église Saint-François ont été construits à Cochin en 1503 sur la presqu'île de Mattancherry Le palais de Mattancherry a été édifié en 1555, il a abrité des gouverneurs occidentaux et des rajas locaux. La synagogue Pardesi (les Pardesis sont des juifs chassés d'Espagne en 1492) a été construite en 1568 mais une communauté juive existait à Cochin depuis le début de l'ère chrétienne Les hollandais ont chassé les portugais de Cochin en 1663, ils y ont construit plusieurs fortifications et des maisons d'habitation dont certaines ont été restaurées et transformées en hôtels. Les anglais ont conquis Cochin en 1795 L'aménagement et le dragage du port de Cochin ont eu lieu en 1920 |
