Français : Sur l'épave de l'hourque la Matutina en train de couler, éclairé par une torche tenue par le voleur Ave-Maria, le docteur Geestemunde lit aux comprachicos contrits la confession manuscrite relative à l'enlèvement et la mutilation de Gwynplaine. Cette peinture à l'huile de Georges-Antoine Rochegrosse a servi de modèle à la gravure de Fortuné Méaulle reproduite en page 137 du roman de Victor Hugo, L'Homme qui rit, dans l'Édition Hugues (1886). L'illustration correspond au texte de la première partie, II, XVIII « La ressource suprême ».
