L'ancien hôtel de luxe Watson (détail), dont l'armature est en fonte, appelé aujourd'hui Esplanade Mansion Conçu par l'ingénieur Rowland Mason Ordish, pour devenir un hôtel de grand luxe appartenant à John Watson, ce bâtiment a une structure en fonte, il a été terminé en 1867. Son architecture date de l'époque du Crystal Palace de Londres. L'hôtel était réservé aux blancs. Il a accueilli de nombreuses personnalités durant la période coloniale anglaise. Il est aujourd'hui dans un état extrême de dégradation et a été inscrit sur la liste du patrimoine mondial en péril à la suite d'interventions de Renzo Piano.
