LC-USZ62-131584: President Calvin Coolidge (left) and Lieutenant Junior Grade Thomas J. Ryan, Jr., USN (right). Photographed on 15 March 1924 at the White House after President Coolidge had presented the Medal of Honor to LtJG Ryan. He received the award for "extraordinary heroism" in rescuing a woman from the Grand Hotel at Yokohama, Japan, which was on fire after the Great Kanto earthquake, 1 September 1923. He was then attached to the American Embassy at Tokyo, Japan. Other personnel are unidentified. (7/10/2015). Medal of Honor citation of Ensign Thomas J. Ryan, USN. (as printed in the official publication "Medal of Honor, 1861-1949, The Navy", page 131): "For heroism in effecting the rescue of a woman from the burning Grand Hotel, Yokohama, Japan, on 1 September 1923. Following the earthquake and fire which occurred in Yokohama on 1 September, Ensign Ryan, with complete disregard for his own life, extricated a woman from the Grand Hotel, thus saving her life. His heroic conduct upon this occasion reflects the greatest credit on himself and on the United States Navy, of which he is part." |
