Summary edit

Description LC-USZ62-60359: WWII-Atlantic Convoys. U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Sinks Sub. There’s no time for comedy when general quarters is sounded aboard a Coast Guard cutter. The smiles you see on these Coast Guardsmen mean only that this is the moment they’ve been waiting for – an enemy submarine has just been contacted and every man is running to his battle station. The picture was taken recently aboard Coast Guard Cutter Spencer (WPG-36) in the North Atlantic. Shortly, thereafter, the Coast Guard vessel depth-charged the submarine to the surface. Image possibly pertains to the sinking of U-175 on April 17, 1943. U.S. Coast Guard Photograph. Courtesy of the Library of Congress: Lot-824. Photographed through Mylar sleeve. (2018/02/23).
