Summary edit

Description
English: LNWR boundary stone A London and North Western Railway boundary stone marking the edge of the land above the Standedge tunnels.

The first tunnel carried the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and opened in 1811. The canal company was then bought out by the Huddersfield and Manchester Railway in 1844 who used the canal tunnel in construction of their railway tunnel.

This company was then taken over by the LNWR who completed the single-track tunnel in 1848. In 1871 a second, parallel tunnel was opened by the LNWR.

In 1894 the London and North Western Railway opened a third rail tunnel, with double track and a length of 3 miles, 60 yards. This is now the only railway tunnel in use.
