English: The Lady-in-law, Vanessa cardui, is a species of Lepidoptera of the family Nymphalidae. A migratory butterfly, it has a quasi-cosmopolitan range and is the most widespread daytime species in the world.
The imago of the Belle-Dame is a medium to large butterfly: the length of the forewing is generally between 27 and 34 mm. A large part of the upper side of the wings consists of an orange to pink salmon background with a complex network of black spots, except for the apical portion of the forewings, which is black with white spots. The upper surface of the hind wings presents a row of 4 to 5 black postdiscal points. The back of the hind wings is tarred with beige and white, with white veins and five postdiscal ocelli, some of which have a gray-blue center. Both sexes are similar. The individuals in progress or at the end of migration are often recognizable by the faded appearance of their wings, due to the alteration of the scales that compose them. The Belle Dame is the largest butterfly in the world: it can be found on all continents except Antarctica and South America. It is common throughout Africa, Asia and Europe, but its migratory nature makes it permanent resident only in a few places. She is absent from much of Oceania. In Australia and the nearby islands, it is replaced by the neighboring Vanessa kershawi. In Benin, the species is not a permanent resident, but is present for part of the year (from April to October approximately) as a migrant, and can be observed in all departments of the north of the country, in abundance very variable depending on the year. Pendjari National Park is part of the Vaessa Cardui Refuge in West Africa during their migratory journey. this image was taken around the park of the Penjari. |
