Français : Tout laisse à croire que "La Régate sur le Grand Canal" est un œuvre de commande peinte par Canaletto pour l’un des riches étrangers pendant son "Grand Tour", le voyage qu’accomplissaient les jeunes nobles européens pour enrichir leur culture générale. Grâce à une étroite collaboration avec Joseph Smith, collectionneur d’art et bientôt consul britannique à Venise, Canaletto bénéficiait du goût des britanniques pour le védutisme. Dans le souci de leur plaire, le peintre s’employa dans les années 1730 à cultiver un style très net, très précis qui exaltait dans une lumière limpide les festivités de la Sérénissime. Cette toile est du reste inspirée d’un modèle de composition élaborée par son ainé, Luca Carlevarijs.
