« George Stephen a acheté les droits de pêche de la rivière Mitis et a fait construire la Villa Estevan dans cette région sans doute pour avoir un camp de pêche plus près de Montréal et de la ligne de chemin de fer l’Intercolonial. La construction de la Villa Estevan a été un projet d’envergure, elle a débuté en 1887. Le bois utilisé pour sa construction a été coupé et préparé en dehors du site et expédié par train à la gare à proximité de Saint-Octave-de-Métis. Les fenêtres ont aussi été réalisées à l’extérieur, puisqu’on retrouve sur le cadre de bois le nom du fabricant fait au pochoir, ce qui suggère qu’elles ont été emballées et envoyées à Métis. L’identité de l’architecte demeure inconnue, mais les livres comptables du projet indiquent qu’il aurait été payé seulement 200 $, alors que le gestionnaire de la construction aurait été payé 6000 $, une somme énorme à l’époque. D’après ses comptes, George Stephen aurait investi plus de 76 000 $ dans la rivière, les bâtiments, le terrain et les améliorations.

Estevan provient du code de télégraphe qu’il utilisait alors qu’il était le président du chemin de fer du Canadien Pacifique. Il utilisait ce nom de code pour ses télégraphes confidentiels qu’il échangeait avec le directeur général du chemin de fer, William Van Horne. »
