Description

Lactarius petersenii Hesler & A.H. Sm.

Image location: Franklin Parker Preserve, Chatsworth, New Jersey, USA

> A scattered group of several fruiting bodies growing in the middle of the blue-blaze trail in mixed woods (pitch pine and oak) of the Speedwell section of FPP. > Injured gills instantly oozed copious pinkish-brown latex; the latex eventually stained the gills brown upon drying. > Odor not entirely unpleasant, but sharp and rather acrid. > Keyed out well and matched the description and pix in the milkcap book. > The wording in the books suggests hemlock as the symbiont, but there surely no hemlock in the NJ Pine Barrens!

Microscopy: Amyloid in Melzer’s; [20/1/1/]: L x W = 8.6-10.5 (-11.2) x (6.7-) 7.0-9.3 (-9.8) μm; L x W = 9.5 × 7.7 μm; Q = (1.12-) 1.13-1.33; subglobose (3 spores) to broadly ellipsoid to low range ellipsoid (17 spores); Q = 1.23
