Summary edit

Description
English: This image, acquired by one of the two Copernicus Sentinel-2 satellites on 8 April 2021, shows Lake Uru Uru in Bolivia. Prior to 2021, Lake Uru Uru had been known for its thriving ecosystem protected by the RAMSAR intergovernmental convention on wetlands, which had also made it into a tourist attraction for boating and fishing. However, due to the effects of pollution and a prolonged drought induced by climate change, the lake has become polluted and covered by trash and industrial waste. On 7 April 2021, the day before this image was acquired, hundreds of volunteers gathered at Lake Uru Uru to start collecting plastic waste and cleaning up litter, in hopes to restore it to its former condition. Amongst other diverse purposes, open data provided by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission are used as inputs for pioneering projects aimed at detecting and monitoring marine debris such as floating plastic litter.
