uncredited I have found copies of this old image in a number of places on the internet. Image here shows a diagram full image locomotive parts with the title "Machine Locomotive employee sur la route enfin? de Bolton ?? Manchester" (English: Locomotive used between Bolton and Manchester). The Lancashire witch was first used on the Bolton and Leigh Railway, and then used on the construction of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway before it opened in 1830. Locomotive development was rapid and then more advanced Rocket and Planet type locomotives where available. Here is a derivative image of the side and elevation of the locomotives (note the mark on the boiler) attributed to "Collection: Charles Dollfus"; It is unlikely that Charles Dollfus (1827-1913) was the author, but that the drawing was found after he had died. No draughtsman is recorded on the drawing, but it is very unlikely that anyone working in 1830 would have been alive in 1944. |
