Summary edit

Description
English: Built in 1859 as a large Italianate-style building known as the Lansing Block, the middle section of the building was renovated in the early 20th Century, adding Renaissance Revival-style elements to the facade. The Lansing Block was home to the Murray House Hotel in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century prior to this renovation. The building’s two Italianate-style sections feature bracketed cornices, painted brick facades, stone sills, decorative window headers, one-over-one windows, and modified first floor retail shopfronts, with a tall parapet and low-slope rear shed roof. The modified central section of the facade is clad in marble with fluted corinthian pilasters on the third floor, a band of trim below the windows on the third floor and recessed spandrel panels above the windows, a cornice with modillions above an architrave featuring dentils and fleur de lis, a cartouche below the central bay on the third floor, small windows on the second floor, and marble panels cladding the base with a central recessed aluminum storefront flanked by bays containing a plate glass window and a single door. The Lansing Block presently houses apartments on the upper floors, with a mix of offices and retail spaces on the first floor. The building is a contributing structure in the Newark Downtown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
