Description

Sur ce bas-relief de la galerie sud (aile est), un combat entre Khmers et Chams est représenté.

Les Chams sont reconnaissables à leur couvre-chef étagé, ils sont assimilés à des "asura" (démons ennemis des dieux). Les Khmers sont coiffés d'un petit chignon, ils sont assimilés aux "deva" (des êtres célestes supérieurs). Cette métaphore est destinée à montrer la supériorité des Khmers sur leurs ennemis.

Le Bayon est le temple-montagne du Roi khmer Jayavarman VII (1181-1218). Il était au centre d'Angkor Thom, la capitale du royaume.
