Louis Philippe Robert d’Orléans, duc d’Orléans (1869 - 1926) est l’arrière-petit-fils de Louis-Philippe. A ce titre, les prétendants au trône n'avaient pas le droit de résider en France. Il était un naturaliste, explorateur et un écrivain. Il épouse l’archiduchesse Marie-Dorothée de Habsbourg-Lorraine (1867-1932) en 1896. Au printemps 1904, le duc, la duchesse, leur suite et quelques nobles bretons, dont le général de Charrette, embarquent à Gênes pour une croisière au large des côtes italiennes sur leur yacht, la Maroussia. Son nom était une référence à la nouvelle de l'écrivaine ukrainienne Marko Vovtchok.

Également à bord, l’écrivain Louis Bertrand raconte quelques détails de ce voyage dans la Revue des deux mondes (1937). Emmené par le commandant François de Gentil Baichis (1844-1926), brillant officier de la Royale, le navire passe au large de Naples ; on devine la silhouette du Vésuve au second plan de notre gouache. La même année, il découvre la Norvège sur ce même bateau, avant d’en acquérir un autre l'année suivante en 1905.
English: The Maroussia, yacht of the Duc d'Orléans

Naturalist, explorer and writer, Louis Philippe Robert d'Orléans, Duc d'Orléans (1869-1926) was the great-grandson of of Louis-Philippe. In 1896, he married Archduchess Marie-Dorothée de Habsbourg-Lorraine (1867-1932). In the spring of 1904, the duke, duchess, their retinue and a number of Breton nobles, including general de Charrette, embarked Genoa for a cruise off the Italian coast on their yacht, the Maroussia, named after the novel by the short story by Ukrainian writer Marko Vovtchok.

Also on board, writer Louis Bertrand recounts some of the details of this trip in the Revue des deux mondes (1937). Led by Commander François de Gentil Baichis (1844-1926), a brilliant officer of the Royale, the ship passed off the coast of Naples; we can make out the silhouette of Vesuvius in the background of our gouache
