Description

Le parvis et le bâtiment du musée national d'art occidental à Tokyo parc d'Ueno, Tokyo, Japon.

Le musée a été conçu par Le Corbusier (1887-1965) avec l'aide des architectes Kunyo Maekawa et Junzo Sakakura qui avaient travaillé dans son agence avant guerre et construit le pavillon japonais de l'Exposition de Paris en 1937.

Le musée national d'art occidental a été inauguré en 1959 pour abriter la collection de tableaux impressionnistes Matsukata saisie par la France au moment de la 2ème guerre mondiale et restituée au Japon à condition d'être présentée dignement. (ref. J.L. Cohen, Le Corbusier, Taschen, 2015)

Suspendu au-dessus d'un rez-de-chaussée ouvert, le plan du musée repose sur une spirale carrée. Le centre de convergence est un espace élevé éclairé par le haut sur lequel s'ouvrent les balcons de l'étage supérieur. À leur tour, ces balcons sont éclairés par des lucarnes supérieures (à gauche sur la photo). (ref : The Grand Tour, Harry Seidler, Taschen, 2003 )

Il fait partie de l'ensemble de bâtiments construits par Le Corbusier inscrit le 17 juillet 2016 au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO.
