This admirable saint, whom Jews might bless, and Protes-tants adore, lived at a period when Christian art had widelydeparted from its primitive simplicity, and there is somethingin the grand, mannered, ostentatious style of the pictures andsculptures which commemorate him, quite at variance with thegentle yet severe morality, and profoundly spiritual temper,the meek and resolute character, of the man to whose influenceand example Ranke imputes, in great part, the reform amongthe prelates of Italy and the restoration of ecclesiastical dis- Rtcipline in the sixteenth century; the preservation, in fact, ofthe Church of Borne, when it seemed hastening to a swiftdestruction.
