Summary edit
DescriptionLeonard Stanley Church (St. Swithun) (15636783662).jpg | Leonard Stanley Church (St. Swithun), originally part of a Norman priory built 1121-29. The church is cruciform in plan with a large central tower, the upper part of which was added in the 15th Century. The windows were mostly 13th/14th Century insertions. Originally the church was a priory church dedicated to St. Leonard. The existing 10th-early 11th Century Saxon Church (still existing but incorporated in farm buildings behind), which was dedicated to St. Swithun. became redundant. Whilst the monks worshipped in the chancel of St. Leonard's, the nave alter of the priory church was then used by the parishioners and this part of the church was confusingly dedicated to St. Swithun; eventually the whole church became known as St. Swithun. Photographed 24 October 2014. |
