Title
Letter from Ernest Rutherford to Georg Bredig
Description
Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937) provides Georg Bredig (1868-1944) with a reference for Kasimir Fajans (1887-1975). Rutherford speaks to Fajans' work in his laboratory, his work ethic, and his qualifications to work with Bredig. Ernest Rutherford is known as the father of nuclear physics. In 1908, he received the Nobel prize in chemistry "for his investigations into the disintegration of the elements, and the chemistry of radioactive substances." Rutherford is well known for his "gold foil experiment" in which he demonstrated that the atom has a tiny and heavy nucleus, overturning J. J. Thomson's (1856-1940) "pudding plum" model for the atom.
