W G. Elliote D D.

My dear friend,

I am more sorry than I can express, that I am forbidden by my state of health, to make any promise of [two words unclear] which could tax a brain exhauted [exhausted] by mental work. I dare not pledge myself to do what thee ask for.

It seems to me that as F. Duglass gives the Oration, it could be fitting that the poem or ode should be written by on of his clan. My friend Miss Charlotte L. Forten of Washington

— a young Lady of fine culture I am sure could do it & do it well. A line by her care of F. Douglass could reach her. If she is written to pray let my name be used in urging her to undertake it.

I have looked over with deep interest the vol. on the Westerb Sanitary Commission I did not need it, however, to learn the noble self-sacrificing part taken by thyself in that remarkable work.

With [word unclear] of respect, & appreciation of thy labors for the enslaved & the suffering[?] I am

truly thy friend

John G. Whittier
