We did not understand what theywere saying, but we knew if we were going to landthat we must go with them about a mile to shorein their tossing, little boats, and we did, and theylanded us all safely on African soil. Crude look-ing conveyances with boisterous drivers, and ascore of clamoring guides met us on the dock. Wewere soon at the custom house and on our waythrough the streets and the narrow byways of oldAlexandria to the hotel. It was our Sabbath day,but we saw no Sunday there; everything was openexcept the business places managed by the English. It was a fete day and everybody was on thestreets throwing candies, beans and small clip-pings of different colored paper. We were peltedwith beans thrown from the balconies as we drovethrough the streets. Narrow ribbons of coloredpaper hung in festoons across the avenues of thecity. Thousands of people, clothed in every im-aginable style, thronged the market place
