Deutsch: 2: Faust's Traum. Mephisto: »Lausche, wie die Geister wiegen in Schlaf sanft dich ein.«
Der zweite Teil spielt in Norddeutschland. Faust, des Lebens überdrüssig, will Gift nehmen; die Töne eines Osterchorals halten ihn davon zurück. Mephistopheles erscheint, verspricht ihm Macht, Glück, Genuß, Erfüllung jeglichen Wunsches. Um ihn in den Strudel des Vergnügens zu stürzen, führt er ihn nach Auerbachs Keller. Hier singt Brander das Lied von der »Ratt' im Kellernest«. Da Faust jedoch dem wüsten Leben keinen Geschmack abgewinnen kann, läßt Mephistopheles ihn am Ufer der Elbe durch die Gesänge der Erd- und Luftgeister in Schlummer singen und zeigt ihm im Traume Margarete.
