Deutsch: 1: Robert: Die Waffen, meine Rosse - Sind leider nicht mehr mein.
Der Text der Meyerbeerschen Oper gründet sich insofern auf historische Tatschen, als Herzog Robert, im Jahre 1028 seinem älteren Bruder Richard III. als Herrscher der Normandie folgend, wegen verübter Missetaten den Beinamen »der Teufel« führte; er starb 22. Juli 1035 auf einer Wallfahrt zum heiligen Lande in Nikäa. Seine Heldentaten nebst Busse gaben den Stoff zu einem 1496 in Paris erschienenen Roman; diesen benutzt Scribe zum Buch der Oper. - Unser Bild stellt dar, wie Robert, verführt vom falschen Freund Bertram, all sein Gold nebst Waffen und Rossen im Spiel verliert.
