Notes
  • Significance: The Miller House was erected in the mid-1850's. Allen Miller purchased lots 13 and 14 on Eight Street between Edwards and Jackson Streets in 1855. Soon thereafter, he had a home built on Lot 14 for himself and his family. Miller was known in the Springfield community as a prosperous dealer in leather, stoves and tinware. The Millers resided on the property until they sold it in 1864. The Miller and Lincoln families were neighbors during the years Lincoln was emerging as a national leader. The Allen Miller House and grounds were an integral part of the urban environment familiar to the Lincolns. At a later time, the second floor was made into a separate living unit, and another entrance was provided to serve the apartment.
