Summary edit
DescriptionLloyds TSB, Queen Square, Wolverhampton - geograph.org.uk - 1453045.jpg |
English: Lloyds TSB, Queen Square, Wolverhampton Lloyds TSB in Queen Square is built in two architecturally contrasting and adjacent halves.
On the right, the original Lloyds Bank (now Lloyds TSB) was built in an Italianate style in 1879. The building was designed by the architect J.A. Chatwin who designed the Wolverhampton Art Gallery. The facade includes three panel friezes depicting agriculture and industry, carved from Portland stone by Mr. Carter from the Cheltenham firm of Boulton and Company, who also did similar work at the same time on the art gallery. The friezes can be seen here: https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1173333 https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1173346 https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1173358 The late 20th century extension, seen here on the left, faced in similar stone, avoids diverting attention from the more ornate Victorian structure. This extension is on the site of the old Queen's Ballroom. The paving and decorative walled enclosure in the foreground were completed in July 2009. |
