DescriptionLock 54 C and O Canal from NPS.jpg |
English: Lock 54. NPS site says: Construction of Lock 54 began in 1839, but due to the financial troubles of the Canal Co., it was not completed until 1848. It is constructed of both grey limestone and tan sandstone, much of it of inferior quality. The lock was much repaired and patched over time and even timber was used on occasion. The walls have shifted and tilted since the abandonment of the canal in the 1920s. In 1974, the NPS filled the lock in with earth order to stabilize it. |
