| Description |
c/n 683C-4053. Built in 1963 directly for NASA, this ‘104’ has no military history or serial. Originally numbered ‘012’ it was later renumbered as ‘812’ with the civil registration N812NA. It flew as a high-speed chase aircraft, including for the X-29 program, until retired in December 1986. Initially used for spares, it later became part of the AFFTC museum. In 1997 it moved to Palmdale where Lockheed-Martin converted it to represent an XF-104 by removing the inlet-cones and spine fairing, among other mods. It was later returned to a gorgeous early NASA scheme, but sadly without being converted back to stock condition. It remains on display at the main gate to the Lockheed-Martin plant.
